Marcus J. Mastin, author of such novels as
Don't Pay the Ferryman and
Don't Fear the Reaper, delivers his
first compilation of poetry. Reading this collection
of light-hearted poems (mixed with several
thought-provoking topics), not only from chapter to
chapter, but also differentiating them by the timeline
in years, you get to see the progression of Mr.
Mastin’s work & the evolution of his talent.
The poetry in Weathering the Storm: The Journey of my
Life was inspired by friends, family, and many events
that transpired in his life with several of his poems
being written solely to help people relate to similar
events which occur in their lives. Mr. Mastin’s poetry
is a variety of soul searching, broken promises,
broken hearts, and light-hearted anecdotes. Some of
his work is about love lost, love found, and love
eternal.
Living in a rural community, Mr. Mastin drew much of
his work from personal experiences; however, there are
other instances where his poems were inspired by the
works of other great authors—such as Edgar Allen Poe’s
‘The Raven,’ of which, Mr. Mastin included his version
of a sequel to that timeless masterpiece entitled ‘The
Raven: The Second Coming.’
The various themes of the book are separated into five
chapters, each with its own distinctive subject
matter. The verse found in this work touches on
various topics such as the Columbia spacecraft
disaster, the loss of a child, frightening
nightmares/creatures, and poems about the changing of
seasons.
